WHAT'S YOUR TONIC?
WED, JUNE 06, 2012

It is easy to pick up Canada Dry or Schweppes at your local supermarket; and maybe one or both of those choices will do you right.  But what else is out there?  I went hunting for a higher quality tonic with natural ingredients.  The three below utilize either cane sugar (Fentimans and Fever Tree) or agave (Q Tonic), and natural quinine (with the ability to treat leg cramps and malaria).  Just saying.

If dry is your game, Q Tonic is for you.  The most bitter of the batch and surprisingly crisp.  This is the only American brand of those sampled.  The back story of the company is intoxicating.  Friends in Brooklyn decided to do a better tonic.

Fentimans is the first of two botanical tonics from across the Pond in England.  Fentimans originated just over 100 years ago.  They have an old school process dating back to their beginnings.  It is crisp, refreshing and lovely.  Also served at the Chateau Marmont (for when in LA).

Fever Tree is smooth.  The taste is familiar to Fentimans, maybe a bit more bitter.

Fentimans is stocked in my fridge.  Perfect balance.  Next, vodkas.
